There’s nothing quite as satisfying as the feeling of waking up sniffle-free after a bout with a cold – and there’s nothing quite as anxiety-inducing as hearing that familiar sneezing and coughing from your cubicle mate. If you’ve passed your cold onto someone else, you might find yourself wondering, “Can you catch the same cold twice?” While it’s highly unlikely that you will catch the same exact cold twice, you can still fall victim to other viruses.
Can You Catch the Same Cold Twice?
Causes of the Common Cold
Cold and flu season peaks between December and February, and chances are that you’ll feel under the weather at some point this season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the common cold is most often caused by rhinoviruses, but symptoms can also be linked back to more than 200 other viruses including respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, and coronavirus. Any of these viruses can cause common cold symptoms, including a cough, runny nose, sore throat, and headache. These viruses are especially prevalent during cold and flu season.
The Science Behind Catching the Same Cold Twice
When you catch a particular cold virus, your body generates antibodies to ward it off. Those antibodies help immunize your system to that specific cold virus. However, that doesn’t mean you’re protected from the other 200+ viruses that cause cold symptoms. So while you can’t necessarily catch the same cold twice, another virus could quickly infect you even if you’ve just recovered from a strain. That virus can have the exact same symptoms as the previous virus. Back-to-back colds? Sounds like a recipe for a miserable winter.
Avoiding the Common Cold
Regular hand-washing is a big part of avoiding the common cold, but there are a few other ways you can outsmart cold-causing germs. First, take a look at your surroundings. While you might be diligent about cleaning your kitchen countertops, germs can hide in sneaky places.
When it’s time to clean your home, your workplace, or even your RV, the SafeSpace® Germ Fogger is an exceptionally handy product. It kills 99 percent of the germs responsible for colds, flu, staph, and MRSA, and its disinfecting mist can reach easy-to-overlook areas: bathroom corners, knobs and handles, light switches, door frames, baseboards, and more. So if you know that someone ill was recently in your home, pull out a germ fogger and disinfect the space before you come into contact with any lingering germs that carry the virus. One germ fogger can treat an area the size of an average hotel room, offering approximately 6,000 cubic square feet of disinfectant fog.
So can you catch the same cold twice? Not really. Your immune system builds up antibodies to fight off a cold virus, making it unlikely that you’ll come down with the same virus anytime soon. However, while it’s highly unlikely that you’ll catch the same cold twice, you can still fall victim to one of the other 200+ viruses that cause colds.
For that reason, it’s important to practice good hygiene all year, but especially in cold and flu season. If you need some help tackling the hard-to-clean areas in your home, vehicle, or office, look at what SafeSpace Company® has to offer. For more information, give us a call at 1-800-735-2506.
